60 inches from floor to center of picture or painting for most pictures. There are exceptions when you are putting up very large items or sets though.

Well, besides the obvious, nail, hammer, position, etc. I do have an easy suggestion. If you have a group of pictures, maybe a seashell, a shelf, ... you know, "stuff."
Lay it all out on the floor, change it around and see what arranement looks good. Then... get the nail, hammer, etc.
