I have black granite countertops in my kitchen.?
Question:I know they are non-porous stone, but what exactly can I put on it? Could I put a hot pan or hot baking sheet, for example, onto it instead of putting it on a trivet? Would it damage the granite? I guesss what I'm asking is, what can it handle?
Answers:
Granite counters are not only beautiful but also exceedingly tough. They are made from one of the hardest natural stones on the planet. While they can definitely handle a hot pan or baking sheet, the potential problem is more of a cosmetic one.
The surface of your countertop has been polished to a shine (natural granite has a chalky finish), placing metal objects (and specifically dragging metal objects) will leave tiny scratches in the surface that will eventually "dull" your finish. These small abrasions are easily remedied by using a buffing compound (most chain store like Home Depot carry it - just ask for a granite polish in the Kitchen department) and some elbow grease or a small buffer like you'd use on a car.
So, i guess the answer is up to you, the contertops can handle it, but you'll have more work to do keeping your counters new looking if you do.
Congrats on the beautiful countertop and hope this helps!
You can do it, the granite will stand it.
the most important thing to remember about granite is what you clean it with. ammonia can damage the sealant they use to protect the granite.
You can put anything hot right on it ! its the best.
clean with a product like cinch. no ammonia.
have fun enjoying your granite
Granite is strong and mostly impervious to heat and cold.
It is not, however, impervious to scratching. If you wish to keep your granite looking Installation-new, you must use trivets, towels, etc to keep it from marring. Otherwise, use it casually and have it rebuffed every 4-6 years...
We have a black granite work surface in our kitchen. You can put a hot pan on there but it would be advisable to use a trivet. Over time you may lose the shine. Things to be careful with are chemicals such as oven cleaners or stain removers.
obviously you're not gonna melt a rock, but the polish is way more fragile than you might think, protect your investment
