How do I calculate the amount of fabric yardage I need for a pattern?

You've got a couple of good responses there. Here's another hint. If in doubt, try to make a rough drawing of the pieces to scale on graph paper and cut them out. On another piece of graph paper, move the pieces around until you get your best fit. That'll tell you how much yardage you will need. Always get an extra 1/4 yard to allow for shrinkage. I've been making my own patterns for years and this has always worked for me.

On the back of the pattern are the directions for how much fabric you need. Since this is new to you ask the person in the shop to help you. She may also have better ideas than you do as to type of pattern.
depends on the width of your fabric, does the pattern need to be cut on the cross e.g. A line skirt or full dress, if it does this will require twice your length,if it is a straight skirt or pants you need just once your length.check if it is a stretch fabric because this will require less fabric but you must place the pattern pieces a certain way with the stretch, pull out the pattern instructions to see what picture and laying requirements before you ask for any fabric to be cut.
The best site I have found for this purpose is http://www.iluvfabrix.com/products.php... They also have a calculator on the site that tells you how much designer fabric you will need for a particular project. Check out http://www.iluvfabrix.com/upholstery-fab... I have found that the designer fabric sold here is the best of the best at way below wholesale prices. Hope this helps.
