How do i decorate the area above the fireplace?
Question:if its a high ceiling, should a frame be lengthwise?

You can put a great many things above a fireplace, a mirror, painting, relief sculpture, metal or iron work sculpture, vine plants.the possibilities are endless and limited to your imagination.
It can go either way, but vertical would be nice if the ceiling is high.
The newest craze is setting the pics on the mantle- and the bigger the better in your case- you may also want to have a large vase with high flowers on one side and maybe a high candle holder with a large candle on the other...
balance.is key...make sure the picture is not too small...dont add too many nicknaks on the mantel...i have 1 large picture...3 candle stick (3 different sizes) and a bust of a childs head...2 candle sticks (tall / sm ) on left side of mantel...right side med candle stick and the bust..it has a balance..your eye should look at the whole picture not jump from one item to the next...
All the answers are good. Don't put a mirror up without looking to see what it reflects.
I personally love Nate Berkus's ideas off Oprah. I have used many of his ideas and received tons of praise. My mother put a beautiful mirror-lengthwise above her fireplace with a bunch of different sized candles all in clear glass vases. She has been given many compliments also, especially at night when candles are lit and shining in the mirror.beautiful!! Here is a site with a picture of what I am saying from Nate.

My Moms wall are green.she went with tan candles, her accessory color and added colored marbles in bottom of vases. Pictures are not big on or above mantels today. Hope I helped.smile.
i also have high ceilings and also two fireplaces. i have a big mirror with two wall sconces on each side of the mirror. on the mantle i have a plant underneath the center of the mirror and on one side of the plant i have 3 candleholders.but i arranged the candleholders 1st. tallest, 2nd. small then at the end i put the middle size one. on the other side of the plant i put 2 vases one high one and the other one short. i get alot of compliments on that. the other fireplace i havent done nothing to it. i just purchased my home still have alot to do to it. my mirror is a length size one.
