Do twin bunk beds need box springs or just mattresses are enough?
Question:We are planning to buy bunkbeds for the first time so just wondering if we need to buy mattresses with boxsprings or just mattresses are enough? can any one suggest?
Answers:
You need something solid to support the mattresses. A thick piece of plywood will do.
As long as you have the mattress fully supported (platform not rails) it will be fine.
Most bunkbeds I've seen don't have boxsprings in them, they would take up too much room. Go by a furniture store and look at some, though. there may be different styles.
They usually have only mattresses, because the purpose of a boxspring is to provide support, which is unnecessary for bunks because they have it built-in.
HOWEVER, in my opinion, if you can afford a boxspring, it gives more comfort!
Depends On How The Bunk Beds Are Made. Usually The Mattress Will Do. Watch The Persons Sleeping On The Bunk Beds. Children Can Jump Off.
You really can't use a box spring b/c it won't fit with a mattress too. You need something called a BUNKYBOARD. It's sturdy and somewhat thin to give you the support you need. I just bought one for a twin and were only about $30. You can find these at any mattress and bedding furniture type store. Value City carries them. It will look much nicer than a piece of plywood...no splinters ouch. They are covered with material.
It really depends on the bunk bed that you're buying.
What you want to check is:
1. How high the side guards are?
If it's low, you can't use box spring.
2. Does the bunk bed have standard support system?
If it has, all you need is mattress.
If it does not, you'll need to have some sort of support for the mattress. I would say bunky board is the way to go (it's about 1 inch thick).
