Answers:
Get a whole house fan, if you can do it. I installed ours myself, and even though we have a central heating and a/c unit, we can cool the house with the whole-house fan without having to use the A/C for most of the summer.

It REALLY sucks in the cooler air from outside in the evenings and mornings, and pushes the hot air out of the house and attic. It really makes a HUGE difference if you can afford it and/or can do it yourself.

It is the single best thing I ever did for our house as far as cooling the place down is concerned.

What we did before we got our air conditioner was we ended up sticking a fan in the hallway...right behind it we got a mixing dish of ice and put a little cold water...like a make shift swamp cooler...that helped when nothing else would. I would try to do something like that at the doorway that way it would help circulate the cold air into the other room.

Edit...the fan that I would use would be one of the box fans...and point it away from the room with the air conditioner with the mixing bowl of ice/water mix directly behind the fan.

And I agree, an attic fan would help cool down the house.
Not looking at your diagram, but if you can put in an attic fan, I would do that.
Ok, do this no matter what anyone else says.

1) Throw away all fans because they use alot of power and do not cool anything, they just blow hot air around.

2) Remove you way too small window air-conditioner and buy a much, much larger air-conditioner and put it in place of your old air-conditioner.

3) Throw away your way too small air-conditioner or use it in a bathroom window.
Have you tried putting the fans in the window with one pulling air in and the other pushing it out? Or pulling the air thru the upstairs with one on low opposite the air conditioner the opposite side of the upstairs? Would lose some air conditioning but cool the rooms down some. Might try a dehumidifier also upstairs in both rooms if necessary which is basically what the airconditioner does.
you know you can go to home depot they sell these awsome cling ons with print you can put on one side of the window it helps alot keeping out the heat especially if u place curtains or blinds on top of them and you can take them off in the winter if u store them properlly and use them over and over.
