Looking for a cheap way to redo floors.?

Question:We are renting a house and the floors are awful in the kitchen. Need some really cheap ideas on how to replace them. We were thinking laminant or vinyl, but if we get the kind that look like wood floors, does it look really cheap? Any other ideas on cheap types of floors or refinishing what we have?

Answers:
Have you checked on the cost of having the floors refinished? Maybe they just need screened and coated. Call a flooring pro and get their opinion. It may be cheaper than replacing what is there.

Also, are you sure your lease allows you to do this? Get it in writing from your landlord. You might end up being liable for damages.

Lastly, you might consider area rugs. You can cover a lot of the floor with them and take them with you when you leave.

There are some decent brands of wood squares of varying sizes that have peel off backs with heavy-duty stick-um. My father and i did a bathroom floor and it came out quite good.
I would go with a no glue vinyl floor. They are easy to install and if you want you can lift it up and take it with you. Here is one type.

Have you considered carpet? Our kitchen was carpeted when I was a child, and I am always telling my husband I want to do my kitchen like that now. It was kitchen carpet, very tight to the floor and easy to clean. My mother said it was always easier to clean that carpet than the linoleum floors she had at her first house. She would just vacuum up any mess and shampoo once a month. Anyway, just another suggestion there. :) Good luck!
On two different HGTV shows I've seen plywood planks laid down for flooring. One room was huge so they didn't even cut the sheets of plywood down. One put oil based primer on both sides and the edges to seal completely & seal the seams w/paintable caulking & apply 2 coats floor paint. The other just slapped polyurethane on the plywood (I'm assuming both sides and edges). Both pre drilled holes and secured with washers and screws which were exposed and looked modern (or you could prime the metal before painting).
