Question:Okay, i posted something like this about a week ago, but i dont think the title question was catchy enought because i only got one answer...so i'm trying it again.
I'm trying to make a futon more comfortable bc the mattress i have on it sucks! Does anyone know what i can do, someone told me to use foam but i dont know how that'll work. I've looked at some mattresses but they're so expensive!

Why not try using the convaluted foam (Wal Mart) It is sold with the mattress pads. It makes it very comfy and then you could hide it with a pretty sheet. Or use it on the underside of the futon mattress. Yes I agree, they are not comfy. If you go with a regular mattress, you cannot fold it up to the sitting position. I have an older mattress in my spare bedroom. It is comfy but after I put the foam on it, it feels brand new...

If you're not into the foam egg shell topper, try a down mattress topper, kinda pricey but still not as expensive as a mattress. College students use them in dorms on their beds! Hope this helps.
You could try something like this, or a featherbed. It goes on top of the existing mattress.

I'd think they meant a foam mattress pad top, like the "chopped or cut" or "egg crate" style. You may have to get a large one and trim it to fit your futon mattress, then it goes under your futon cover, on top of the main mattress. Ooooo - so comfy.
These types run anywhere from about $20.00 to $70.00, depending on the quality of the foam and where you buy.

Judge wisely and ask other's advice. You may just really need to trash the old one, in which case you'd be wasting $$ to buy the foam pad.

You may have had a low density foam on it when you purchased it and after time it will break down.
Your only choices are to spend the money for a replacement for a clean look, purchase a new high density foam from an upholsterer (or wherever) or add a feather bed to the top.
Just consider the price options of each. Foam alone is just not comfortable unless you have coils, or have it wrapped with feather.
well a mattress that is foam at walmart.com is under 250 and its alot like a futon mattress but i think its comfy! but if thats to expensive i guess buy a topper but those things to me really aren't nice after i've slept on this mattress!
