Answers:
they have a tile remover machine.. you can rent it from a tool rental supply store. it is not expensive and cuts the work to half the time..
Sledge hammer?
Myself, being as cost concious that I am, would take a hammer and chisel to the problem. A lot of work? probably, but I would get the job done!
It it's over concrete, rent an electric chipper hammer with two blades. Use a 3" to 4" blade to take up most of the tile and a wider 6" to 8" blade to go over the floor to remove the balance of the adhesive. If it's over wood you can beat it with a sledge hammer and usually the flexing of the wood will make the tile de-bond. In either case wear protective clothing and seal the area off to control the dust.
You'll need to consider how to dispose of the tile also.
