buy green bags for the supermarket.. they cost around $1.50 or so and you usually get $.05 - $.10 per bag per day back for using them.
Well, I for one use cloth bags when I'm shopping, no matter what I'm shopping for. Mostly, I prefer a backpack bag that keeps my hands free for shopping.
For those who don't want to carry a cloth bag, the first time in the day that someone gives you a plastic bag, make sure you use that same bag in other stores until it's full before allowing another store to give you a bag.
Buy refills of soap, fabric softener, etc., in smaller bags as opposed to buying new containers.
Here's a good article that should convince you to stop using plastic bags:

Don't use disposable plates or disposable silverware.
Recycle your plastic containers.
If you don't need a plastic bag at the store (say for only 1 or 2 items) don't take one.
Carry a large shopping bag whenever you go to the market. Re-use existing plastic bags and items already in your possession until they wear off and can be trashed.
