When I am not using my fireplace, like in the summer, is it harmful to leave the flume open?

Question:

Answers:
No, you should close your flue to also keep out the heat from coming in and if you have AC, you'll be wasting a lot of energy. Not to mention the animals.

Just remember to reopen. I always check it with a flashlight before I light a fire to be sure. It is also not a good idea to leave it open in the winter. Your heat will leave the room and the cold will just pour in.

No, varmints will invade!
As long as you have a good screen at the top you'll probably be fine. Be aware that if you are running an air conditioner the fireplace will be drawing air out when the wind blows so it will be sucking out your cooler air.
