Which goes first Tread or Riser?

Question:Replacing stairs to by basement, which is installed first. Risers and butt the treads aganist them or treads and risers sit on them??

Thanks

Answers:
risers first just place them the proper width for how you want to place your treads (top or inside) hope this helps

Aha Me think the pros all install the Riser first..
kind of hard to make the Treads float in mid-air ya know...

seriously install the Riser's but up against wall work your way up doing the Treads. don't worry if there not even at first...
after your done with all of them find the shortest tread measure and cut all the rest to that ones size.
We generally install from the bottom up. The bottom riser can be fitted tight to the floor and sides Once in place, sand the top edge for a perfect fit. Then the tread is installed on top. The ends can be trimmed to fit perfectly, the front overlaps the riser and if there's a small gap at the back it will be covered by the next riser. This assumes there is a sturdy structure under the treads. The other method I've seen is to rout a 3/8" high slot near the bottom of each risers and trim the back edge of the tread (like a ship-lap joint) so they fit together and provide stiffness to the tread. In this case you would install the risers first and the treads after.
