I need help getting organized?

Question:My husband and I are living in a room. We are living with my parents until we can save up money to get our own place. We have both lived in apartments before and with our two dogs it's impossible to live in an apartment and the dogs having running room. We are very young (Under 24 years old). We have too much crap for our small space. We also have a storage building we are renting with all our stuff in it. It too is cluttered with crap. How can we get organized so that our space is liveable and not cover in clutter!

Answers:
The best thing you can do to make it easier to maintain an organized living space is to declutter.

Both in your room and in your storage unit, sort through your belongings and ask yourself what needs to be kept and what can go. You can sell the things you choose to get rid of in a garage sale and add that money to your savings for your new place.

I am sure there are things you want to keep for your new place and that is why you have rented a storage unit. Just make sure you are thinking realistically when it comes to saving things. Determine how long it will take you to be able to afford your own place and keep that time frame in mind when you are sorting through your things. If we are talking a couple of months, it is probably worth it to hang on to things. If we are talking a year or more you may not even like those things anymore or the cost of the storage unit might outweigh your desire to save the items.

As far as the room you are living in goes:

1. Get rid of as much clutter as possible.

2. Get creative with your storage solutions. Take advantage of unused spaces like under the bed or behind furniture to stack plastic storage bins that can hold unused items.

3. Think vertically - can you had shelves to the walls to maximize vertical storage space?

4. Designate a home for everything. Things cannot be put away unless they have a home to be put in.

5. Create a chore chart and assign yourself a couple of small tasks each day to help keep your living space clean.

Get stackable storage shelves or boxes (those you buy at office depot/staples). Number each box and put alike things in each one, then make a list that tells you what is actually in the numbered box. Stack the least used items (boxes) on bottom, or use shelves to stack them for easy access. There are boxes that are like files stackable, but are more expensive. I used this system when living with others and needed to access things put in storage, made things much easier to access and I was able to find things too! Hope this helps!
I bought a book for getting organized off http://www.organize.withtips.com... it is called finally organized finally free, they have some others too, depending on using the information for home, work, even the holidays.
