What should I look for when buying a flag pole?
Question:I am looking to purchase a flag pole, one that would be put in the ground. What do I look for to make sure I get a good one? I don't want to spend more than $250.

As you mention $ dollars I presume you are in the US. I am UK. When I was in Tulsa I went into the Home Store - if you have such a store you could ask them what types of flag poles they have and what special instructions.
Again you could ask the Military, they should know all about flagpoles - this is a serious suggestion.
Also you could ask the relative Works Dept of your local council/civil authority.
The reason I have mentioned these two bodies is that they have genuine expertise in the business of flagpoles.
You have not mentioned height. As you have mentioned putting it into the ground and not projected from a building I would suggest a minimum height of 15 feet. The usual material is Pine, painted white of course. Pine is strong, has some give and is durable. It should be painted with a paint that has molecules and allows the wood to breathe.
So how are you going to secure it? Hole in ground - that will require specialist knowledge - seek it.
You can have a base plate concreted in ground; side flanges with holes straight through plus bolt going through hole in flagpole. This will enable you to lower it for maintenance. It will also need at least 3 guy ropes secured to ground.
The predominant factor in your mind must always be "safety".
one that is tall enough to meet flag regulations (25 feet i think) so you need a 30 foot flag pole that needs to be buried 5 feet.also make sure its pretty thick not flimsy you dont want it falling on your house :)
Make sure it is not made of metal. Because if it's made of metal and it freezes the neighborhood kids wont get their tongues stuck on it.
Thank you.

I put my flag on an 10' x 4"x4" pole that I put in 2' of concrete. Holds up the flag. You could use a 12 footer if'n you want it up in the clouds.
God Bless
