Kilz will sure kill you from the fumes so make sure you open windows and sounds like you'll be doing the whole interior cause it's the only way you'll get rid of the smell. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more and use Zinseers Bullseye "Odorless" primer/sealer/stain killer. As far as washing and all that hassle that's what our grandma's did 30 yrs ago, if your gonna go through all the motions use a paint roller instead of a sponge. Tsp (Trisodium phosphate) is a cleaner yes but you have to rinse thoroughly or paint won't adhere well, it's another old fashioned remedy, you want nice dry walls for paint why the heck do you want to soak them up with moisture?? Any unpainted surfaces should be washed and like I said every inch HAS TO BE primed or washed or the nicotine smell will still linger, Good luck Les the painter
Killz works pretty good.
Kilz you can find it in most stores that sell paint
wash the walls first. Some water, bleach and a sponge.
Most of it will come off. You can paint right over it when it dries.
The most important thing is to wash everything down.
apply a coat of kilz as your primer coat,then paint the topcoat over it the kilz will lock in any issues with the smoke ,use theoil based kilz..painting contractor
If your really having trouble getting it off try using some greased lightning or Dawn dish soap in water. After that if the smell doesn't go away I would use kilz and then paint it. I understand your problem where I moved the people smoked in the house and had a dog that went in the house. We stripped the carpets and painted on the kilz and that eliminated the pet odors. I am a smoker but, I smoke outside because I can't stand to have yellow walls or lamp shades. It was so thick when we were cleaning before we moved in after we wiped the mess on the ceilings in the bathrooms with dish soap you could literally peel it off like paint stripper would do to paint. It was totally gross. Good luck its a lot of work.
nicotine is an oily substance, kilz can cover it, but, if you want to do it right for the future, you need to wipe the walls down with ammonia, then prime with kilz.

I like in hopeless cases this powder called Dirtex which you should be able to find in a hardware store. It mixes w/water so get a bucket & a sponge & I like it it because it's less caustic than TSP & you don't need to rinse it off when you're done.
I work on houses (mostly paint) 4 a living, been doing it for a while at this point.
If it were me I would use the product KILZ. Its an awsome product and has worked well for us.
