I want to paint my medal kitchen cabinets.?
Question:I live in NY and moved into an apartment in an old complex (built in the 40's). Any ideas on where to start and how to proceed?

There are several schools of thought on painting metal. I have two suggestions on this. The first is to purchase a paint stripper and strip the matal bare, then clean with mineral spirits and paint with rust-o-leum. The second is to purchase a liquid sander, this is a liquid that wil remove the sheen from the original paint, again clean with mineral spirits and then you can use a latex primer and paint. The second way is easier and easier and cleaner. The first way is a little more involved because of the waste it produces, but it is the better way. Both ways will require you to use rubber gloves and a dust mask. U can do a quik fix, but you wont be happy with the results.
If they have paint on them now you can LIGHTLY scuff them up with 150 grit sandpaper or use a liquid sander with a rag. If no paint is on them then prime with a Zinseer product like "Cover Stain" or "Bins" and then use a 100% acrylic paint Good luck Les the painter
