Duvets originally came out of rural Europe and were made from the down feathers of the Eider duck, which is well known for its usefulness as an insulator. In Spain and Latin America a duvet is known as edredón. In Germany it is called a Federdecke, or feather cover.
to expand upon equipment dude's answer, the duvet is the part he described while the other answers were refering to the cover that goes over the feather/down Quilt. typically the duvet is white and sperate covers can be bought to cover them giving you a greater variety of decorating options for your bedroom. the one other plus to a duvet +cover is you don't necessarily have to have a top sheet. most people in Europe use a fitted sheet and a duvet negating the use of the top sheet as the cover can be washed with the rest of the linens. I have two duvets and during the winter because I like to be piled under the covers it's a luxury being covered with allthat fluff. during the summer I bump it down to one. Good Quality covers are not cheap, but when you consider the space it takes up it's far better than purchasing a new fiber filled comforter and then tryingto figure out where to store it when you want a change. with the covers you have so many more options for seasonal looks that are easy and take up much less space..

I see lots of thumbs up and down on these answers. I also think everyone is correct in their own way. Don't forget, some of these answers are written by people in the US and some in the UK. In the US people tend to refer to the COVER as the duvet and the inside down comforter as well, a comforter. In the UK, the comforter is the duvet and the other is a duvet cover. ..therein lies the rub...
