Use some short pieces of 2x4 and screw them inside the wall so that some of the 2x4 still shows in the hole, on all 4 sides if possible. Then cut a piece of drywall big enough to just fit in the hole and screw it to the 2x4s, Then patch the gap with a layer of drywall mud, let it dry and sand it. Then apply a final thin coat of drywall mud, sand again, retexture if needed, prime and then paint.
1x4's place between the studs, top and bottom of hole. hold to old drywall with drywall screws. Cut piece of drywall to fit hole. Screw into place. apply drywall tape and "mud". Then sand seams, and add necessary cosmetic to match existing walls.
