Staining Stripes in Wood without the colors bleeding?

Question:I'm staining a skateboard and putting a couple stripes of dark stain down the middle to contrast with the light stain. I'm doing this by using painters tape, but no matter how hard I try to push down the tape, a little bit of the dark stain bleeds over to the light side...anyone have any experience with this and if so, what's the trick to staining perfect lines?

Answers:
You're probably finishing it off with polyurethane. Use Minwax's Polyshades, which is stain mixed with polyurethane. You can finish and color at the same time. Add more layers to add more color. Top it off with clear polyurethane and you're in. Plus, polyurethane is a large molecule and very thick, and shouldn't bleed under the tape. Use the BEST tape you can buy, not the cheap stuff.

Good luck with that, staining and painting are 2 very different things. The stain is going to absorb into the wood, unlike the paint. The only way to get a perfect line would be to glue the different pieces of wood together (which you probably should not do if you are not normally the skateboard builder).
You really don't have many options, deal with it, try to build your own with seperate boards, or buy one already like that.
The trick is to apply the tape, and then, with a utility knife, score the line. The scoring stops the stain. Try it first. They do this all the time on HGTV.
