Painting wood?
Question:I would like to learn how to stain and paint unfinished wood. What are the best types of stain and paint to use? Tips for the best result. I have seen some wood furniture that has been painted to look as if the furniture was older. How do you do this?
Answers:
There are glazes that can be applied over wood to make it look antique. You can also apply a wax coat over the stain which is quite common in older furniture.

Your best bet is to go to a paint store. You need to "see" and explain to them and they can show you type info. You can see what it is that you do and do not want.
free unfinished wood is easy to get from building sites. Always prime twice before painting. I like Walmart paint, oh, I know! Actually Consumers Guide compared it to thirty dollar paint favorable. Oil based stains are more natural for wood, but water based do a good job. They sell Crackle paint. It is designed to separate as if old and peeling. Buy ever thing buy the gallon and experiment for pure enjoyment.
Our master bedroom furniture is natural unfinished wood with just seal applied. The best way to get the look you want is to get some of the same type of wood and experiment. The store you buy it from will always say to try a small area before doing the whole piece, because once stain is on it, it's hard to change without using a darker stain. Your store should have the instructions. Use fine sandpaper after staining, and ultra fine between coats of poly. As for making it look older, you would have to get some help on that. Done correctly, it's great, if not, it can look like a child was trying to stain it.
