Why did they stop putting handles on mattresses?
Question:
Answers:
because they were tearing the mattresses
That's a great question, bet it has something to do with the cost, what else could it be. Trying to turn a mattress without the handles is almost impossible and even more back wrenching.
The mattress handle installers went on strike and they have not resolved the issue yet. Most went to work at Wal-mart.
I was cursing about it last week...
Damn them for striking! ; )
Also they make mattresses "un-flippable" now. My daughters twin mattress has a hard side and you can't sleep on it. When I was a kid I had the same mattress for most of my childhood. We just flipped it once a year and now we can't do that! And there were tears where the handles used to be on my childhood mattress. They ripped off in the first couple of years.
mine has it on it but then it's a sealy.. but i know what u mean. I have anthr w/o soo
about the same time that men started working out in exercise places (rather than gyms).
Actually, there are still some brands that put handles on their mid-range and upper end models, namely Sealy and Stearns & Foster.
Most brands, however, do not have handles and this change started about 5-6 years ago when Simmons Beautyrest came out with the one-sided non flip mattress. A one-sided mattress was actually better for the individually pocketed coil design of the mattress and the change to non-flip turned out to be a huge sales booster for Simmons. Since their mattresses were one-sided and didn't need handles for flipping, they were able to cut costs by not putting handles on their beds. Soon almost every major manufacturer followed suit and most of the mattresses you'll find in retailers today are single sided mattresses and without handles.
For most of the major brands, mattress handles were not covered under warranty anyway and they advised that consumers avoid using the handles for flipping their mattresses. The handles were supposed to be mainly for aesthetics and for adjusting your mattress on your boxspring.
You mean all this time the handles were suppose to be for flipping them over?? I was using them for other things ooooops!
