Can I put insulation around recess lighting cans?

Question:

Answers:
There is two types of can lights.
1 That u can
and one u cannot. It should say on the can if its rated for insulation. Call the store and ask for lighting and tell them the model of can and they will tell you. I just installed 250 of these lights so I know! If you have a can already installed and its covered with insulation it will usually get hot and shut off until it cools down.

Check with the info on the cans itself, some you can and some you can't. The cans themselves should have a warning if you need to keep space next to them.
Yes,we did all of ours.
only if the cans are approved for contact.
A complete lighting fixture may be rated for contact, but the model number inside the can will always say the lighting fixture is never rated for contact. The difference is that they are built two different ways. Airtight fixtures (for contact with insulation) come assembled inside a metal box. The box contains enough clearance between the light and the insulation or combustibles to guarantee no combustion. So if those fixtures were not specifically rated for contact, I would strongly urge you not to use them at all, or replace them. You will waste a lot more money in lost heat that you will in replacement cost.
it depends on the lihting in cans incandecent cans should be ok depends on the model and halogen cans get too hot so there is a certain amount of space needed between the cans and the insulation... best bet is to find out specifically which kinda you have and look up the model information online or at home depot
