What is red wire for when installing ceiling fan?

Question:

Answers:
A ceiling fan usually has two hot wires, either a black and blue or black and red. The black is for the true hot from the switch on the wall. The red or blue is for dimmers, or other switched on your wall. In my house, every room has two switches that control my ceiling fans. One switch is for the fan and the other is for the fan lights. The red wire is probably for that. Without knowing the type and model of the fan, this would be my best guess.

It is there just in case you have a use for it. When some appliances are wired at the factory they have to compensate for things like dimmers and timers etc. and the common and hot would not be enough.
The red wire is for a licenced electrician to connect. If you do the job and the house catches fire and is destroyed your insurance company will not pay as illegal wok was carried out.
