What does it mean when the planning site of the city put a stop all work stamp on your building permits?
Question:I just checked our permit status and it states to stop all work. We haven't began our work and it shows that fees are due. We paid our contractor for the fees and received a receipt from the city.
Answers:
I have heard of city or towns doing this if they realize that you are building in a 'historic' area or something like that where there may be an ordinace against new buildings going up. If they said that you owe them fee's, though you should call and make sure that what you paid your contractor for was everything that was needed.
Building and work permits are a pain in the ***. If they can get you for any hidden fee's I'm sure they will. Call and find out what is going on.
somebody screwed up
cant imagine that happening with a city and their top notch people
but you better talk to them and let them feel important or they will pout and cause you grief
all the way through the project
It means run for cover the sky (your bank acct) is falling LOL
Simply it generally means things are not up to code!/standard.
Most likely contractor is not legit in his standing altho some cities LOVE to play politics and rake in money via fines just cuz they can.
Your question is a loaded one in that, contractor, city, and permits in one sentence is a loaded gun of scams.
I just spent over a year dealing with all of that, (ONLY because he was referred) and I would take the advise of many who say NEVER HIRE a personal contractor!! Get a handy man!!
Luckily for me I did most of my homework before the hiring and had a back up plan and my ducks in order, on how to approach each issue as it came up (and come up they did from day one)
Recommendation?
Go to your COUNTY website and READ READ READ (between the lines) on codes and what contractors can "attempt" to do to ruin your life under the guides of "I'm legit"
(it's not much reading but is a great guide to follow/know)
Your best guide in this adventure is with your "county" not the city or contractor. Reason being they both generally have their hand in the kitty.
