Sanding question?

Question:Hello!
I've got some doors in my home that I would like to repaint. They're currently painted with some old super-glossy paint & I'm having trouble finding sandpaper that does anything to it. It seems like the paint is stronger than the paper! I have some stuff that strips paint off wood, but I don't necessarily need it stripped all the way down, do I? I don't particularly want to buy a sander.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you rough up the surface a bit just to give it a little "grab", then be sure to wipe all the sanding dust off well. You must use the best quality oil-based primer before you paint. Be sure to allow the primer to dry well before you paint with your chosen colour, which must also be oil-based. This should work for you ... Good Luck!

You will be much happier with the results if you rent or buy a sander and sand it all the way down to the original wood. Get one with a lot of power and then start on the outer edges so that you can't see it. If they are real wood, you will have a beautiful finished product, but even if they aren't you will have a much lower chance of peeling if you do it right.
All you have to do is scuff the surface, that is, knock the gloss off of them. It sounds like they are probably older doors with enamel paint on them... You need to repaint with the same. Not latex enamel, but oil-based enamel.

I hope this helps!
I've read that a good scrub with a product called TSP is all you need, or maybe twice. You need to get the gloss off so the paint will adhere.

Ask at the paint dept at a local hardware store.
i would wash the doors down w/ TSP. Then if u'r not into sanding which is best b/c it gets all the years of paint off, use Kilz. Then paint the doors w/ enamel to clean off better & protect from nicks.

If u do decide to sand ask u'r friends if they have a sander or u can rent one from Home Depot or hardware stores & start w/ the coarse sandpaper first then easy up to fine b'/4 painting.

If it's the old paint.. TSP works great but I don't think it will work well w/ the OLD enamel.
TSP is great to use b/4 painting anything to dull or get the grease off. Kilz is the next best thing. Use the orginal Kilz.. not the latex Kilz. It acts as a primer.

Hope that helped.
they make a bonding agent to make glossy paint tacky enough to take a coat of paint, ask your paint dealer...
