Why are their crack in my ceiling and spiderwebs? What can I do about it, it's a victorian house.?
Question:Will I have to have the entire ceiling done?
Answers:
You will probably find due to the age of the house, that the materials used to cover ceilings does crack after a period of time, bearing in mind that you walk on the floorboards above the ceiling. All houses move with the warming up and cooling down of the walls and floorboards, if you are very lucky you can actually hear this, it sounds like creaking of wood usually late at night.
Polycell do a paint that covers cracks and is also flexible to allow for movement etc. (Ex B&Q staff).
Spiders, I'm sorry are part of living in an old house, have you got a cat?
The cracks are probably due to the age of the house. If they are just superficial you won't have to have the ceiling totally redone.
The cobwebs are where the spiders live because you haven't dusted.
Any chance of a bit more info?

Just a crack then no, its a bit vague though.
Move.
My old house was the same, cracks all over the place, and giant wolf spiders running round the place freaking me out lol.
The cracks won't do any harm.
Victorian house will likely have lath and plaster ceilings. They are notorious for cracking. If the cracks are taped and the ceiling skimmed, it won't be long before new cracks appear. The material (sand and lime) is so old it is losing it's grip gradually on the wooden laths which are nailed to the joists. In extreme cases, left for too long, the ceiling can collapse. The only long term fix is to either remove the lath and plaster (a filthy job) and replace with modern plasterboard or alternatively cover the existing ceiling with plasterboard. Will need to be skimmed either way.
