I am removing carpet and laying hardwood. What do I do to the subfloor to ensure pet odors are removed?
Question:Ever since I moved in three years ago, it has been impossible to completely eliminate pet odors from the family room. So, I removed the carpeting and padding, and sprayed stains with ammonia and water, but my daughter's cat still thinks that the family room floor is a huge kitty litter box. I am going to put hardwood down, but want to know what the best product is to completely eliminate the pet odor from the subfloor, so that the cat will use the litter box, and not the floor after the remodeling.
Answers:
Nature's Miracle is an excellent odor remover.

After you remove the carpet, spray the subfloor and let it dry.
Kilz brand latex sealer/primer/stainblocker.
Gotta go with Kilz comment. They use that stuff even to cover up fire damage. Its a good solution because it really works. Even on pet ordors.
I had to leave the subfloor bare for awhile after soaking it a few times with Nature's Miracle - one thing - take a black light through the dark room and the spots that need treated will glow. Pour the NP and let it do its thing. Keep doing that until no more glow.
NP comes in a special formula for cats as well...
The new floor may not be able to go down right away, but it'll be worth it!
About the primer idea, I had a contractor come in and tell me NOT to do that as it would seal the subfloor and the carpet would stay soaked if something spilled on it. With the subfloor not painted it absorbs a bit and dries. That is exactly what I was going to do...actually was going to pay him to do it but he said he wouldn't for that reason.
mop the subfloor with bleach before the hardwood is laid down. we went through the same thing with our house as well. it really works!
borax
You could try a product called KILZ. It comes in a spray can. You can get near the paint anywhere they sell paint. It is used to spray onto areas that have been water damaged and started to mildew before being painted. Try it it may work!
