Theme for kitchen?
Question:My boyfriend and I just bought a house and I've been thinking of doing a theme for the kitchen. I don't want to do apples, or sunflowers (something I see alot in other houses) do yall have any suggestions?
Answers:
I saw one decorated like an old farmhouse theme that turned out looking really good, including using the wood siding from barns on the center island and some of the wall parts.
french cafe?
bakery?
wine shop?
picnic?
Vineyards...grapes and wine, Cats, 50's diner themed...
my kitchen is decorated with an array of nostalgic tin signs advertising some odd type of food. i also have dishes glasses and canisters with old fashioned looking labels on them. i get complements all the time.
Mine is done in lemons and green apples. The colors are vivid. The walls are painted a greenish yellow. It's taken me forever to decorate because I've waited until I can find the perfect items.
cats :) if u like modern themes u can use geometrical shapes in ur fav colours... flowers look great in kitchen... u can use lilies instead of sunflowers lol :) u can choose a sea theme but i think its mostly for bathrooms... or u can create a village house theme by using wooden tables, chaies etc...green looks great with wooden stuff.have fun...
Instead of a 'theme', you may want to just do a solid color palette so you don't quickly get sick of it. (For instance: green, blue & white ...or black, red & silver)
Doing that also helps allows you to add an accessory to work from to help with a theme later if you still choose to do so. Good luck!
sunflowers are really cute...
I cruise around antique shops for ideas. Lately I've been collecting blue glass though and so my kitchen is in a blue/white/yellow theme.
IMHO things like apples, cows, sunflowers are too commercial.
Walk into a junk/antique shop and think about the very first thing that catches your eye, now expand on that thinking how the color or idea could work for you! Good luck & have fun!!
What ever you do, make it your own. If you and your husband are drinkers, you could do a bar theme, I love wine, and cheese. Just take something you love, and do it. You could frame some of you and your husbands favorite recipes and put them up in the kitchen. Have fun. Congrats on your home together.
Make it like a Jack in the Box. That way, every morning that you wake up, you will always feel like you are first in line.
Who is going to spend the most time in the kitchen? This is the person who needs to come up with the theme. And check the how to shows on the net work. And Home Depot, Lowe's and Sears, ETC. This will give you some ideas what you are looking for. Good luck and have fun with this and do it together that's the most fun you will have. And if you can do the whole house this way-----TOGETHER!!!
well, what kind of things do you like? that would make answering the ? easier.
You can go with just a color theme... like pick a greyish blue, and have accessories that you display in that... OR have that old green glass stuff to display... and a fairly neutral background...
You can really do anything that you want to do.. like lemons for example... and have the kitchen painted like a nice soothing saturated yellow, and have a rich white/ivory color (not BRIGHT white) for the cabinets, and accessories. in white and yellow.
For me personally... you don't really want to go with a "theme" then the room feels more like it was purchased from a book... you want it to be more "homey" and comfy... so just pick a great color... or a fruit or food of some sort as the inspiration... and then accessorize with items that you like! It will feel more like a home then.
I like french country. Here are some samples of what it looks like!

The basics for a french country kitchen are.
Wrought Iron
blues and yellows.or creams
at least one thing that has a rooster on it :)
Have your chairs mis-matched, you can find really cool ones at thrift stores or yard sales.
Good Luck
Go with a broad theme so you can pick up lots of different hings and wont get tired of everything being one thing like apples. Have an Italian style kicthen or French. Do a Mardigras theme or country kitchen with antiques. You could theme it after something you enjoy like coffee. You could display vintage coffee containers and have your eat in area or breakfast nook if you have one look like a little coffee shop. My kitchen is done (and always growing) with wine and grape themed things. Good luck and congrats on your new home!
regardless of what you do it needs to be a reflection of each of you. but whomever does the majority of cooking should pick out the pans and gadgets they like. also what are your heritages? if he is irish and you're italian combine the two styles of traditional kitchens. it could be uniquely the two of you
Whatever theme you choose, I would suggest staying with light and more neutral colors. Dark colors tend to creep in on you and you will feel like your cooking in a cave. Real bright colors tend to get garish after awhile and you'll be stuck with that color theme to avoid eye jarring clashes.
It's easy to decorate around neutral colors and you can change or mix and match your themes more easily. I suggest looking in decorator magazines, go to antique shops browse catalogs and look up the major cabinet and appliance makers websites for theme ideas (Kohler has a great one, you don't have to buy their expensive products to get decorating ideas). Once you know what you want, keep it inexpensive and you won't be afraid to change if it gets tiresome.
