How can I make my old desk look rustic or primitive like?

Question:Any ideas how to give wood that old look? Paint? Sanding? Tools?

Answers:
This sounds crazy but comes out looking really cool. If you take a hammer and hit the top of it (not hard enought to break it but just hard enough to dent it) it gives it that 'beat up' rustic look. I have even known people to use an ice pick to put little divits in the top.

I worked in the furniture industry for many years and one of the things, they would take a short stick with a 10 inch long chain that had other smaller chains up and down the length of the chain. On these smaller chains would be nuts, bolts, washers and barbed wire. Just as the furniture is being loaded on the line to be spray finished, they would just whack'em with the hardware to give it the dents and dings that old furniture has.
you can use a thick link chain. and 'whip' the surface. they did this once on extreme makeover home edition. it came out really nicely.
Use a large chain that they use for trucks or cars.hit the desk all over with it then stain and varnish
Distress it by using chains to hit it and roughly drag across its surface, sandpaper to soften the finish, icepick to give the appearance of termite holes, utility knife to shave off a couple edges, beat it and rub it with a few rocks, you could even apply a crackle finish.
