Can I paint with a water based paint over a stained and varnished (or polyurethaned) area?
Question:
Answers:
Absolutely! Sand lightly with fine paper to remove gloss, wash with 1 cup tri-sodium phosphate per gallon of water. Rinse well, dry completely. Coat with a shellac based sealer (BIN by Zinser) and paint.
Shellac will grip to most surfaces sufficiently to allow for painting. I would avoid oil based sealers (Kilz) as the oils can tend to weaken the varnish or poly just a bit. Easier to clean up as well, buy a bit of denatured alcohol.
absolutely not, sand it off or you will have problems
Perhaps with the proper primer. Check with a REAL paint store for advice.
Yes. you will need to lightly sand it and run a tack cloth over it. Then you will need to prime it, water or oil based, then you can paint it with waterbased paint.
no,because water based paint will not stay on a polyurethane surface, but you can paint over stain, but you can't stain over paint.
Sand it first if it's polyurethane. Wash it up and you are good to go to paint. A stain depends on the type. Go to your hardware store. They'll give you ideas on what to do. I usually Kilz my stains first, then paint.
