I want to paint my pine wardrobes...?

Question:do i have to sand them down first? they are antique pine. I also want to varnish my doors around the house - they are already varnished, do I need to sand them too?

Answers:
Don't paint antique pine,it looks so much better when varnished, this allows the grain to show up properly. The best thing to do with varnished doors is to strip them, either by using a blow lamp or "Nitromors" when they are stripped give them a light sanding using medium grade sandpaper. apply a coat of varnish that has been thinned down with turps, this gives the wood a "drink" this soaks in and feeds the wood.Next apply a coat of neat varnish, when this is dry another coat may be applied if needed. It is a matter of taste which varnish you use, matt or gloss, personally I think that matt allows the grain to show up better, whatever you do,don't use the polyurethane rubbish, this just dries on top of the wood without any linseed penetrating it,I hope that this is helpful to you.

yes you would need to remove any type off varnish before you start
It is usually a good idea to sand wood before applying any new surface product. This goes for paint and varnish.

The varnish can be reapplied IF you have the exact varnish from the first application. Make sure the wood is dry and clean before application.
Lightly sand it first, then clean dust with tact cloth, then use oil-based primer, wait about acouple of hrs then you can top coat with latex or oil paint. You have to sand the old varnish off befor applying new but be careful if you have any stain under the varnish. The sanding will take that off as well.
It would be best to sand down your pine wardrobe first before applying a wood primer (oil based primer is better but more expensive). Apply the primer and finishing coats thinly to achieve a better finish, lightly sanding with wet and dry sandpaper in between coats. It should take about 1 to 2 coats of primer and 2 finishing coats to completely hide the wood grain.
As for the doors, if the varnish appears flaky then a sanding down is recommended before applying new varnish, or you could apply a paint stripper first like Nitromors with a brush and leave until the old varnish has bubbled before scraping and sanding.
