The best picture hooks in the world are called OOK (no kidding!LOL). The have strong support hooks and the nail is very small, so wall damage is minimal. You can get them at Home Depot or Lowes.
When you hang your painting, decide where you want it to be and make a small pencil mark. Then turn the painting over and measure the distance from the wire or hook and mark that distance (a few inches for smaller paintings) beneath your original mark. That's where the hook should be placed!

you usually hang pictures according to the weight and size,
always looking for a stud but if there is no stud then use an
anchor to hold the picture firm and in place.
P.S. always use a level.
