The best blinds for keeping a bedroom dark?
Question:I work at night so when I come home I like to sleep in a dark room. Right now i have foil covering up my windows but I would really like to have some blinds up b/c right now my room looks ratty with the whole foil thing. I would like to know what would be the best kind of blinds that would keep out sunlight besides curtains.
Answers:
I like those old-fashioned room darkening shades that you roll down.
Black mini blinds work great in my kids room's.
In our room we have the wide blinds and then dark thermal curtains. During the day we have them tied back, and then at night we close them. They work wonders. Our bedroom windows face East and West.
You can get proper blinds for darkening a room from a blind manufacturer. They use them in Darkrooms etc. Or if you want to make them, you need a thermal-backed material. Not neccessarily black, the bacing will make blind quite dark. Then you need to think what sort of Blind? But does it have to be a blind? You could make curtains and overlap them . Have you checked on Martha Stewart's website? Try!
Find curtains or mini blinds made in a heavy, dark material or, if you have a company nearby that makes them, look into wooden shutters. I used to work for a window blind company that had a seperate department for hand-making wooden shutters and from the demos I saw, they work really well at keeping out the light.
I used to work nights, so I feel your pain!
I thought the blackout blinds were too much $$ so I bought wooden blinds, and they work GREAT! I work graveyard too, so I know how you feel :)
I work nights and sleep during the day too. I just have the big white plastic blinds and I use a black light-weight canvas material to cover my window. Got the material from WalMart. Cost me about $8.00 for a 4 X 3 window.
If nothing else...spray paint your window black...J/K
