Staining cabinets question?
Question:I stripped my wood cabinets with varnish stripper and am attempting to stain them darker. The problem that I ran into that after I stripped and sanded them, some cabinet faces are taking the stain much better than others. Is there something I can put on them before I stain them that will make the stain take better? It's kind of repelling the stain in certain areas. Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

Once you used the stripper and sanded them you should have used tack cloth to get rid of any particles left in or on the wood. Also make sure none of the stripper is still on the wood. After this you want to apply a prestain wood conditioner-you can find this at Lowe's or other home improvement stores. And it is relatively cheap...about $5-$8. Use a china bristle brush when applying. Some woods do not let the stain penetrate evenly and this should help to eliminate the problem. Good luck!
you should get a clear preservative basecoat then apply 2 coats of your woodstain, its not cheap but should do the trick, dulux is your best bet 1L will set you back about £15 but its cheaper than buying new cabinets, hope this helps!
my guess is that when you sanded them ,you sanded them down too far in some areas and closed up the grain so it will not accept the new stain, try running a wet sponge over the area that wont take stain, this sometimes opens up the grain a little more, or try the same thing with paint thinner, if it still does not take stain, you will have to dry brush the stain in those areas.painting contractor
