Can I convert my house to a duplex in california?

Question:My house sits on a big lot, 3br 2ba. I would like to make a small addition and some modifications to make it into a duplex. I herd that you cannot have 2 kitchens in one house. Does any body know or know where i can find such information? Any suggestions relavant to this is appriciated

Answers:
Check with your local building department - is it zoned multi family? If not then the second kitchen is forbidden.

Every town is dfferent. You need to go to city hall to find out what the codes are for your town. You might be allowed to build a "Mother in law" unit behind the house.

Good luck.
yes, it is possible! My dad did this before but it can be very costly. If money is no issue then by all means go for it! Also maybe you know of someone that works in the constriction business :-) that always helps!
that is a lie I live in illinois and my neighbor down the street has two kitchens!! one on the main level and one downstairs! it is a two story home. it is a rumor or jealousy
