Exterior latex house paint, do certain colors last longer then others, what is the longest lasting color.?
Question:type of house paints and colors
Answers:
What causes paint color to fade is UVB/UVA rays from the sun. I was amazed at how much my yellow home faded over 5 years when I went to touch it up with the original paint. When I had the house re-painted, I asked the same question. Consumer Reports just did a major study on paint and found that the brand carried by Home Depot, Behr, had the best resistance to fade. But, flaking and chalking are other considerations, too. Most trim is painted white because it lasts longer than other colors. But, generally speaking the darker the pigment the more the fade which is why you don't often see houses painted black. The brands Consumer Reports rated well were Behr and Olympic. But, a lot of manufacturers are now using UVB/UVA protective chemicals in paint and a couple that Consumers did not rate were Pratt & Lambert and Dunn Edwards which both offer that protection.
Dark, barn red is considered to be the longest lasting, because of the pigments used. It will fade, but retain its protective qualities. Brands vary greatly in quality. The best, bar none, is Pratt and Lambert. It is expensive, and not as widely advertised. But then, you don't see a lot of ads for Rolls Royce, either. I would use nothing else, as I dislike painting and want my painted surfaces to go as long as possible between repaintings.
