Hardwood width...?
Question:I am seeing that hardwood is my best bet for flooring. I have been looking at my choices and saw some hardwood that comes in 6 inch wide pieces (more likely to be seen in a very old home, not a modern day one). Do you think this is too wide for a selling feature? Should we go with a 3 inch wide style or 6 inch?
Answers:
You definetely want to go with the wider boards. This will add significantly to the value of your home without increasing your tax burden. Notice that in new homes they are installing wider planks and that there have been increases in production of the wider widths in laminate flooring.
They look much more elegant. A high gloss finsih adds elegance, not rustic views. For a rustic look try antiquing and slightly damaging the flooring before the final finish coat. This can be readily done on hardwood flooring with a 2" link heavy steel chain. Spend about an hour dropping it onto the floor from about 2' to 3' in height. darkly stain some of the indentations.
Wider is absolutely the trend. Wider will not cup anymore than any other width over time if properly installed. Of course there is the other question, What do you like?
God Bless
The wider stuff will more than likely cup after a while. Go with the smaller stuff. Or you could mix in a few wide ones with the narrow ones.
Either way should be fine, the 3 inch would be less likely to buckle, the 6 inch will give you a more pleasing look. You might consider using a combo for a more rustic look or for a subtle pattern. Bare in mind that the grooving patterns would have to be the same to mix them.
