Painting Kichen Cabinets?
Question:I woule like to paint my kitchen cabinets. They currently have a heavy layer of laquer. Is there a primer I can use first before applying the paint, or do I need to strip the cabinets first? Also, is there a certain type of paint I need to use (i.e. oil base)?
Answers:
Get a heavy duty primer, brand name may vary depending on area where you live. Some primers have a chart on the side of the can that will tell you the surfaces that it is best used on. You need to sand the doors very well, prime them, then I would use a melamine paint (not melamine finish, two different things) True melamine paint is oil based but very durable, just make sure your primer is oil based also!By the way TSP is NOT a primer! Cleaner yes! Primer no!!
I would strip them first because the paint will just run off the laquer.
Light sand prime and use kitchen and bath paint. If ya strip um I'd go with a different color stain and on doors take um down and put about 3-4 coats of polyurethane to make it look like glass sand between coats.
Lightly sand them then add a coat of Glidden Gripper it is a wonderful primer I use it all the time.
You can wipe them down with TSP, Tri Sodium Phosphate, Which is readily available at most paint or hardware stores.
TSP works as both a degreaser and a Primer. When it dries it forms small crystals on the surface which give the new paint something to stick to. For durability and best finish, I would recommend oil based paints. They are much easier to clean and do not absorb grease and stain like a soft latex will.
TSP is available in a dry self mix or a pre mixed sprayer. Wear rubber gloves as it will dry out your hands some.
good luck
Just take the doors off and buy some new ones...look better and not so much trouble. Plus no money for paint or laquer remover.
