Is there a paint remover that works on wood that is previously stained with a wood stain?

Question:I have a stained oak railing that i want to re-stain with a light stain. Would regular paint remover work?

Answers:
Sorry Gordon, Once it's been stained, the stain penetrates the wood and could only possibly be bleached out. If it is oak I wouldn't recommend that because the wood will 'feather' it will return to it's natural state and color but...if you are heart set on doing this, take the rail down, and buy another, stain it any color you want, always go lighter than you think you want, it's easier to go darker. Rarely do lay people know oak from pine, both have grain. So, the point is you could buy a pine rail and stain it oak, then poly it 4 coats, sanding between each one.

you can try bleaching, but you may want to consider a darker stain painting or putting in a new railing
