What to use to thin paints?

Question:Will I be able to use spirits for thinning paint? if not what could I use?

Answers:
For water based paints: water
for enamels: specified thinner
for automotive paints: see your professional as there are too many types to discuss here.

petrol.white spirits, turps
um paint thinner?
If the paint is water based, you use water to thin it. If it is enamel paint, you would have to use a paint thinner. Most Latex paint is water based.
Depends on the paint. The can should have instructions on thinning and cleanup.
emulsion paint should only be thinned with water. Gloss etc has to be thinned with spirits like white spirits or turpentine. You need to check the directions on the tin. There are paint thinners available at any DIY store and Tesco/Saisbury's/ Morrisons/Wilkinsons etc. Even the markets!!
Depends on what kind of paint you are talking about. There are thinners out there for each type. Find out what kind of paint you are using and go get the right stuff. You wouldn't want to make a costly mistake.
I thinned down some orange paint with the juice from 8 tins of baked beans. True story!
PAINT THINNER
Simple - if it's a water based paint use water and if it's an oil based paint use turps or white spirits - or at a stretch, use anything you'd use for getting it off your clothes - even so far as washing up liquid!
Paint thinner is a good start!
I try not to thin more than I can help.Thinning makes the paint lose body and depth of colour and takes longer to dry.If it has thickened through age I use white spirit,it seems to work as well as pure turpentine. For emulsion paint I use water. Also use the same white spirit to clean the brushes and then soapy water..
white spirit or water if it an oil based paint
white spirit and a bit of washing up liquid
Depends on whether it is goss or emulsion. White spirits thins gloss water emulsion.
The paint to watch out for is 'Hammerite' this uses a special thinner which MUST be used with it. Anything else had highly amusing effects - to other people!
RoyS
no if its gloss or undercoat.any oiled based paint use turps or white spirit.
