I guess it depends on how old your son is. I decorated my boy's playroom in basic colors (red, blue, green and yellow). The walls were white and all the shelf's and bins were in basic colors. Keep it simple. I used different colored bins on the floor in one corner to put toys in. This way it is easy for the child to clean up himself. I had a shelf mounted to one wall in the same basic colors for books, crayons, etc. Then I put chalk board on one wall for drawing and stuff. And decorated the walls with my children's artwork and the alphabet and numbers. Basically the simpler the better.
Buy a bunch of plastic containers of different sizes that you can store the different toys in----you know...dinosaurs in one, legos another, art supplies in another, etc. It really helps for quick clean up and storage. I have a really big one that is shallow enough to slide under his bed too.
The plastic storage bins are great. You can put pictures of what goes inside each bin on the outside to help your son learn to put away his own toys. The pictures also help him to pick which toy he wants to play with. Inexpensive book shelves are great for holding smaller bins and books too.
