Question:I have a place that was built in the 50. I love it, but the colors in the living room are a bit to much for me, I want to make it fresh looking, it is a smaller place with hardwod floors and a fire place.

Blues speak clean and pure in color psychology, plus they are calming colors.
Try several shades of lighter values of blues in a monochromatic scheme, brushed nickel or silver accents would look great.
Egg shell - magnolia - cream - how about those paints with a hint of colour apple white etc.,
light colors..very light yellow
I have wood floors too and my walls used to be white. I painted them robin's egg blue with white ceiling and trim and it really looks great. I get a lot of compliments too. It really goes great with the wood floors.
Just about any color on the lighter end of the color spectrum will help open up a room. You can also experiment with some faux finishes and those can help create an sense of openness. I would suggest checking out some design books for color ideas. Often times the design books can give you ideas that you would have never thought of or considered. I would also suggest having the paint color compliment your wood floor.
A soft sage green, robin's egg blue, navajo white or soft yellow can lighten up any room - especially if your hardwood floor is on the darker side. To add to that effect, paint all of your trim and doors a brilliant white in either a semi-gloss or high gloss. Then to add height to your room, paint your ceiling one or two shades lighter than the walls - it gives you a blended effect, or continuation, of the vertical walls.
A buttercream yellow is nice. It's a sunny color with out being too yellow.
I also think cream would be pretty. or very very faint shades of navy, or red.
