How costly is asbestos siding to remove?
Question:Our new house has asbestos siding. We'd like to have it removed and install new vinyl siding. Our home is a two story cape-style house, 1500s.f. I couldn't give exact dimensions of the exterior sides, but what shold we expect to spend to have the siding removed and new vinyl put up? Any approximation would help! Thanks!
Answers:
If the siding is in generally good condition, there is no reason to remove it. The asbestos in siding is non-friable, unless the tiles are broken. Even with broken tiles, the exposure is minimal. Replacements are available for broken pieces that are asbestos free. The material, if properly prepared, holds paint extremely well.
If you are thinking of new siding because you don't like the appearance of the existing and painting doesn't suit you, you can leave the siding in place and put vinyl over it without any problems. Installation of house wrap or a foam backer will encapsulate the asbestos.
A good chunk of the price is dumping the stuff.
I know one town its free, in my town it's $60 a cu yd
