Is there a bathroom Wallpaper sealer?

Question:I bought some expensive wall paper and hung it in the bathroom. Now the color is actually starting to run in spots from the moisture. Is there a sealant I can put over the paper?

Answers:
I'm guessing your wallpaper manufacturer used a water based paint to apply the pattern. Many handmade, retro and reproduction wallpapers now do. Unfortunately, when used in high moisture applications, like a bathroom, paint runs are common. I gather you want to seal the paper so that the paint stabilizes and doesn't run further. You can seal it with a non-yellowing, clear polyurethane. But, do a test first on an extra piece of leftover wallpaper. You may find that using a waterbased polyurethane will actually cause the color to run when applying. If that is the case, you will be forced to use an oil based product. The best application would be a spray on to avoid bubbles but that does not sound feasible in a bathroom. So, use an applicator that causes the least bubbles for the smoothest appearance. The helpful people at the home improvement store can direct you to the proper tools to achieve that with the product you purchase. (Next time ask when you buy the wallpaper and if it isn't colorfast, simply spray the paper before hanging with Work Fixative which will prevent this from happening)

I'm guessing you want to paint over the wallpaper. If so, clean it good and get off all residue, then use oil-based primer like Kilz, then you can cover that with latex paint. But be sure to use one make specially for Kitchen and Bath, because it will hold up to moisture. Valspar makes one that has a mildew resistant coating. And, yes, I do work at Lowes.
No, there isn't. Take it off. Remember, the next time get a vinyl wallpaper that can stand the moisture.
