How should i go about re-upholstering a headboard?

Remove the headboard from your bed, or copy it. You'll need that shape for cutting the batting and fabric. You'll also want a staple gun, and possibly some kind of molding for the back side of the headboard (don't forget the finishing nails and a hammer)- to give it a neat finished look

Get your batting and fabric. Make sure you have enough of both before you begin the actual project. For the batting, cut it with about 1-3 inches around the headboard. In fabric, you'll want about 3-5 inches extra around the headboard.

Once you have the headboard removed from the bed and the batting and fabric cut to size/shape, find a big, clear area to work in- if your living room floor is free, that would be a good place to use.

Lay the fabric right-side down, then the batting. Center the batting on the fabric. Next, lay the headboard on the batting, again, centered. Kneel on the headboard and starting at the top in the middle, pull the batting up around the edges of the headboard. Use the staple gun and tack it down all the way around, every about 4-8 inches. Pull it securely, but not too tightly.

Next, do the same thing with the fabric. You may want to pull the fabric a little more firmly, but keep it even. Fell free to use the staple gun a little more, every about 2-4 inches- you want the fabric to be secure!

Last (optional), with hammer in hand, nail the molding in place to cover the edges of the fabric and the staples. Be sure to get the finishing nails set below the surface of the molding- you don't want the nail-heads scratching your wall.

Re-attach the headboard to the bed.

Congratulations on being more ambitious than I am!!

the question is.how did you tear the upholstering in the first place?
You'll need some batting (like a fuzzy fabric they usually put in quilts to make them more padded) and a nice coordinating fabric. First pull the batting tight across your headboard and staple it on the back, then do the same with the fabric, making sure there are no bumps or wrinkles.

That's the simplest way to reupholster a headboard. Hopefully yours doesn't require anything more complicated. Good luck!
