Can you add portland cement to a mortar mix?
Question:
Answers:
you could if you also match it with 3 parts of sand with every part portland you add; HOWEVER, it will make your mortar stiff, less flexible to accommodate expansion & contraction and wind stresses, and it will tend to hold moisture in the wall. Stiffer tougher mortar will cause a huge challenge to the survival of the bricks, the bricks will be more prone to spall, especially if its a historic brick.
you can, but i wouldnt, what is the application?
mortar mix is made of portland cement and sand so to answer your question yes as long as you add proportionate amounts of sand, i think its 1p to 3s. not sure tho
you can, but I'm not sure why you would want to. Mortar mix is a pre-mix of sand and masonary cement. Portland is used primarily in concrete mix. Some believe that adding portland to a masonary mix adds strength. It's possible I suppose but I'm not a chemist.
mortar contains lime which helps workability and affects hardness. You can add portland cement if thats all you have and its not a large amount. About a 3 : 1 sand: cement mix is right.
