If your kitchen cabinets have a gap between the top and the ceiling, what do you fill this space up with?

Question:Just bought a new house with 9 ft. ceiling in the kitchen and the cabinets reach up to 1 foot of the ceiling, but not all the way to the top. What kind of neat decorate stuff can I fill this area up with?

Answers:
Well there is a couple of things to keep in mind. I would not recommend putting anything of weight over 5 lbs on the tops of the cabinets without first putting down a plywood decking that rests on the frame of the cabinet. Basically the top of cabinets are not designed to hold any weight and over time will collapse in. One trick would be to put plywood decking and then perhaps a crown moulding to hide the plywood. If you really want to make a dramatic statement I would recommend adding up lighting. This will give anything you place on top a much more dramatic look. I would recommend contacting a license electrician to run the wiring. If you have outlets installed instead of lights then you could use a wide variety of colored rope lights, mini spots, or even Christmas lights. Hope this helps

Brightly colored jars of various sizes and widths. Like bright green, bright yellow, bright orange.

There is a little plant that is all green and fuzzy, fine fronds on it, that lives on air, doesn't need water. You could put one of those up there in a bright pottery dish.
baskets to store things and plants or you could close it in with a soffet--they do get pretty dirty and dusty up there
Bird houses , tea pots ,baskets with or with out greenery,
pottery or just get some nice vines and some berry vine and lay up there plates in plate holders , old canisters mix it up with several of the items or just all one thing really just what ever you like. if you like rosters or chickens or even both , add some sun flowers just what ever you like
Pictures perhaps, or if you are religious, a statue of whatever you worship. IE buddha, Jesus, etc
If it's an older style house you could put old jar, bottle and tins. I have antiquie bottles etc on top of mine and it looks great. You could go down to the local op shops or markets and but all different sorts of beautiful tea cups and saucers and put them up there they will be small enough but will also stand out so high up.
I have an assortment of things. Antique bowls, old bottles, some ceramic pieces, old cookie tins, to name a few.
Don't be in a hurry to fill it all at once. Keep your eyes open as you are in different shops or even at yard sales, and you will find an interesting mix of items that will fit nicely.
so it will look the best fill it up with cocking you can buy it at any painting store put it on then paint over it
Start hunting around at the flea markets etc. I am sure you will find some interesting items that catch your eye sooner or later. Take your time to make the right selections. My goal for the same is to find items similar to those "knick knacks" I remember seeing at Grandma.s aunts and moms when growing up.
With the gap that high up no one will really notice neat decorations, I have the same problem and I now store extra kitchen stuff up there, like my big turkey platter, boxes of ball jars, etc.
I just bought a house with a similar kitchen. I've been putting my glass vases up there for now... strangely, the kitchen is big but there really isn't much cabinet space. Anyway, the vases look nice but now unfortunately my cat has decided to jump on top of the fridge and then on top of the cabinets and I'm worried he's going to knock my vases over. Ah, life with cats...
Check with a cabinet company. Many offer different decorative moldings that can accent and highlight the top of cabinets that are not flush mounted with ceilings. I have seen several that had lighting installed with the moldings and they looked wonderful.
I myself don't really like the idea of keeping vases and dishes etc. up there. Although it may look nice but the dust and oil that collects in the kitchen, especially on high spots like this, can make them really nasty. I think that keeping a live plant up there is a good idea. Or you can buy fake vines and such at Jo Anns or Wal Mart and if you run them on the edge of the cabinet with one of those christmas lights (color of your choice) it'll make it look really neat. And create that unique, soft lighting effect around the kitchen. Be creative! I'm sure you can come up with something nice to put up there.
I've got what you have and i've hung decorative wall plates on one wall, and on the other wall, i've put a little wine rack and put all my wine in that. They only come up to 2 bottles since the space is about 1' and thus do not put much weight on the cabinets.
