You can make your room seem much bigger by painting stripes horizontally along the walls. That tricks the eye into thinking it's a longer room. Do not have crown moulding as that draws the room down (appears smaller vertically) and paint out your baseboards the same colour as the walls.
If you go with the stripe idea, do several of varying widths. Maybe half way up the wall do a 1' wide stripe, skip 2" and do a 3" strip (both sides of the large one) and lastly skip 2" again and do a 6" stripe on either side.
If you are the daring type, you can use bright, bold colours. Otherwise, stick to one colour and use different shades. Paint the whole wall the lightest, 6" stripes 2 shades darker, the 3" stripes 2 shades darker again. That will probably take you off one paint strip section of colours so you could either use white for the large one or a complementary colour that's lighter but maybe doesn't stick out as much as white.
If possible, I'd have french doors on the wall nearest the backyard and have a deck outside. Today, decks can be outdoor living spaces, unlike anything we've seen before. There is actual furniture which is beautiful, stainless steel kitchens and BBQ centres, etc. You could have a tiered deck and have flowers for decoration and have the kitchen area with BBQ on the top tier near the doors and eating area below.
Another option is to do what they do in the U.K. and add a Conservatory on the back if the ground is flat leading from your doors. It's basically a glass, florida room giving you a whole new room (dining room??) and can be used all year round no matter what the weather. That will add value to your home and is probably your best choice.
