Questions with Latex Paint?

Question:ok I'm painting with latex, but I do not know the kind of paint I'm painting over (latex,oil-based). Is there a way to find out what it is before I paint it with latex?

Answers:
test your original paint with rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol if it starts to break down the surface you have latex as your base as for what can be painted over what it's oil over latex not latex over oil ask a reputable paint store Sherwin Williams or ICI Deluxe

you can paint water based over oil based but not oil based over water based, the oil based paints tend to lift the water based paint off, Good luck Les the painter
It doesn't matter what the original coating is. You must lightly sand before you apply the next coat whatever it may be, oil, alkyd, or latex. Latex and acrylics give great adhesion to vertually all substrates. Good Luck.
