The best advise I can offer is this: Measure your sq. footage 1st. to see what you have to work with. Try to find magazines and books and look at different styles of how people do things. Rustic, contemporary, regal, etc. Everyhing and everybody is different. Consider these tips:
1. Start with the fabrics of your furniture and style of furniture you have and want to use.
2. Work off of that color pallet to make your color choices for the walls and accent pieces, such as chairs, pictures, pillows.
3. Work with the largest pieces first by making them the focal point in any room you choose.
4. Personal taste is everything and it is to make a statement about you and how you want people to percieve you when they walk in the door. Don't be afraid of color!
5. Try using small nooks for maybe a reading space for a good book or try to build some shelving units, sit in the middle of the large space and divide the space into 2 seperate spaces to utilize. Possibilities are endless, the most important thing is keep it natural, keep it your own personality, and keep it as inexpensively as possible. Yard sales and flea markets are good sources for finding items of interest on a budget.
6. I have a degree in Int. Des. but I do not practice it in public. The education has helped me to fulfill my dreams. I hope I have helped you in some small way.
I'm an interior design student (3rd year of college) and a design assistant at a large firm. Color is my specialty and I enjoy space planning.
